I only recently received your letter because I have moved. Deeply appreciated your concern regarding my sister's condition. She only has visits on Tuesdays for a total of thirty minutes. If three people visit, each one is only granted ten minutes. She has not received any of the letters that you have sent and so hasn't responded. Please forgive her. She and Chen Chu live in adjacent small rooms and are constantly monitored on closed-circuit TV, and there are also tape recorders that apparently monitor every conversation. A visitor must pass through three doors to get inside. Lu Hsiu-lien and Chen Chu eat together every day, but not with other prisoners. They both have a prison guard with them twenty-four hours a day. The food is very poor but two kilograms of food can be delivered by the family. Because Chen's family lives some distance away, I usually prepare food for both of them, as well as clothes and other daily necessities. I am worried that it might be hard for the women to pass the time, so I send them some arts and crafts materials, such as for knitting and embroidering supplies…. Only one hour of exercise is permitted per week. Although Lu Hsiu-lien weighs about sixty kilograms now, she looks bloated from water retention. (She used to weigh fifty-one or fifty-two kilograms.) I received a postcard from Lu Hsiu-lien on January 25 saying that she has discomfort in her eyes and throat. I am very worried that her thyroid cancer might be recurring. We are not allowed to send her medicine, and it would be miserable if she gets sick in prison.
